Types of Palm Trees in Las Vegas and How to Trim Each One
Most types of palm trees in Las Vegas yards come down to a short list: tall fan palms, date palms, queen palms and a few compact palms. They grow very differently and need different care. Below is how each one rates on the official Southern Nevada plant list and how to trim it without damaging the palm.
Quick answer: Mexican fan, California fan and date palms are the common tall palms here, all rated 3 of 5 stars on the June 2026 Southern Nevada Regional Plant List. Queen palm rates 1 star. For any palm, remove only fully brown fronds plus flower and fruit stalks, and never cut above the 9-to-3 o'clock line.
Common types of palm trees in Las Vegas
| Palm | Rating | Mature size (H × W) | Notes from the list |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mexican fan palm (Washingtonia robusta) | 3★ | 60 × 15 ft | Organic mulch recommended; invasive species; poor drought tolerance |
| California fan palm (Washingtonia filifera) | 3★ | 50 × 15 ft | Organic mulch recommended; poor drought tolerance |
| Date palm (Phoenix dactylifera) | 3★ | 60 × 20 ft | Organic mulch recommended; invasive species; poor drought tolerance |
| Canary Island date palm | 3★ | 40 × 30 ft | Organic mulch recommended; invasive species; poor drought tolerance; susceptible to pests |
| Mexican blue palm (Brahea armata) | 4★ | 25 × 15 ft | Organic mulch recommended; poor drought tolerance |
| Mediterranean fan palm | 3★ | 15 × 15 ft | Poor drought tolerance |
| Pindo palm | 2★ | 20 × 15 ft | Organic mulch recommended; poor environmental tolerance; poor drought tolerance |
| Queen palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana) | 1★ | 25 × 10 ft | Poor environmental tolerance; poor drought tolerance |
Notice the pattern: palms are not desert-tough the way mesquite or palo verde are. Most get flagged for poor drought tolerance, so they need steady deep water and do better with wood mulch than bare rock. The queen palm's 1-star rating reflects how often it struggles in our heat and dry air.
One more: the sago palm is not a palm at all. It's a cycad. It's trimmed differently and has toxic seeds and leaves, so keep pets away from the clippings.
How to trim a palm the right way
University of Florida extension gives the clearest rules for palm pruning, and they apply here too:
- Never remove live, green, healthy fronds. Those leaves make the palm's food.
- Treat 9 and 3 o'clock as the absolute limit. Picture the crown as a clock face and never cut fronds above that line. It is the limit, not the target. A round, full crown is healthier.
- Remove fully brown fronds. Leave yellow or half-dead fronds alone. They may point to a nutrient problem, and cutting them early removes green leaf area and the evidence you need to diagnose it.
- Skip the “hurricane cut.” Stripping a palm down to a few upright fronds is harmful. Over time it can mean smaller leaves and a thinner trunk.
What each type needs
- Mexican and California fan palms: both hold dead fronds as a “skirt” down the trunk. Removing the skirt and old frond bases (“skinning”) is mostly about looks, pests and fire risk. These palms get very tall, so trimming usually means climbing or a lift.
- Date palms: the heavy fruit clusters drop sticky dates on patios and pools. Cutting the flower and fruit stalks early in the season keeps the mess down. Sharp spines at the frond base call for protective gear.
- Queen palms: clear brown fronds and seed stalks, and resist trimming green fronds on a palm that is already stressed.
- Compact palms (Mediterranean fan, Mexican blue): mostly need dead fronds and spent flower stalks cleared at ground level.
I did 3 bids for service on my 10 palms at my house. They were not only the best price, but did an amazing job. Trimming trees is only part of the job, attention to site cleanup is very important. They delivered on both. Include Vegas Best Tree Service in your next bid. You will not be disappointed.
