How to Get Rid of a Tree Stump in Las Vegas
If you are figuring out how to get rid of a tree stump in Las Vegas, you have four real options: grind it, dig it out, let it decay, or speed up decay with a chemical remover. Our rocky soil, caliche and drip lines make some of these harder here than the how-to videos suggest. Here is how each method works and when each makes sense.
Quick answer: Stump grinding is the fastest and most complete option for most yards. Small stumps can be dug out by hand. Letting a stump rot, with or without a chemical remover, takes months to years. Before any digging or grinding, contact USA North 811; Nevada law requires it.
Step one: call 811 before you dig
Gas, power, water and cable lines run under many Las Vegas yards. USA North 811 is the free locating service for Nevada and Northern California, and calling 811 before digging is a legal requirement in Nevada. Utilities mark their lines before you start. Mark your own sprinkler and drip lines too. 811 doesn't locate private irrigation.
Option 1: Grind the stump
A stump grinder chews the stump into wood chips below ground level. It is the fastest way to remove a stump and leaves a level area you can fill and replant or cover with rock.
- Pros: done in one visit; works on large stumps; no big hole.
- Cons: the machine is heavy and dangerous for first-timers; it throws rocks and chips, which matters in gravel yards; and gates narrower than the machine can block access.
- Tip: clear decorative rock from around the stump first, and know where drip lines run.
The team made quick work of the tree stump and trimmed all the overgrown branches with such precision, it completely transformed the yard’s vibe! The crew kept the lines of communication open, always friendly and ready to jump on any questions, all while charging a price that felt really fair for the quality provided.
Option 2: Dig it out
Small stumps from shrubs and young trees can come out with a digging bar, shovel and pruning saw: expose the roots, cut them, and rock the stump free.
- Works for: small stumps with shallow roots.
- Las Vegas catch: caliche, the cement-hard layer common in valley soils, can stop a shovel cold. Large stumps are a lot of labor for one person.
Option 3: Let it decay
Cut the stump as low as possible and let it rot. In dry desert soil that can take years, much longer than in wetter climates. It costs nothing, but you live with the stump in the meantime.
Option 4: Chemical stump remover
Store-bought stump removers (typically potassium nitrate) go into holes drilled in the stump to speed up decay. You still wait, often months, and then break out the softened wood. Follow the product label exactly, wear gloves and eye protection, and keep kids and pets away.
Stumps that keep sprouting
Some trees send up new shoots from the stump or roots after they are cut. African sumac is a common example in Las Vegas; Oregon State University notes it spreads by root suckers. Grinding removes the stump, but cut any shoots that appear afterward for a season until the roots give up. See our African sumac guide for more.
After the stump is gone
- Rake out the grindings or reuse them as mulch away from the house.
- Fill the hole with soil and tamp it; expect some settling as buried roots decay.
- If you are replanting, plant a little to the side of the old stump, not directly on top of buried wood.
